2009 Performance of Listed Businesses |
FOURIN has collated the financial results of 110 complete vehicle and automotive parts companies which are listed on the Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong Stock Exchanges. From the results for 2009, overall both sales and profits surpassed figures of the previous year. Compared to 2008 when the cost of raw materials skyrocketed and collapse of Lehman Brothers shocked the global economy into recession, rapid expansion in the vehicle market in 2009 improved the financial performance of the automotive industry.

Vehicle Ownership Distribution |
According to the Statistical Communiqué of the People’s Republic of China on the 2009 National Economic and Social Development announced by China’s National Bureau of Statistics in February 2010, China’s vehicle parc reached 62.88 million units at the end of 2009, up 23.3% year-on-year, of which privately-owned vehicles increased 25.0% to 52.18 million units. Moreover, privately-owned passenger cars rose 33.8% year-on-year to 26.05 million units, a 5.3 times increase from 4.89 million units in 2003 when counting of privately-owned passenger cars began.

Auto China 2010 |
At the 11th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition held in April 2010, 2100 companies (including parts makers) displayed 990 vehicles. Larger models, which are preferred by Chinese consumers, were announced one after another. Moreover, with the announcement of local production of the Hyundai Verna, a shift has begun away from the current practice of production localization of models in China, which have been launched already in other countries, to starting manufacturing of new models in China ahead of other countries.

Foreign Parts Suppliers |
As a result of the global economic downturn triggered by the US-originated financial crisis in 2008 fall, many foreign suppliers temporarily put capacity investment projects on hold in China, however, as a result of the tremendous development of its automotive industry in 2009, investments have been restarted. While it is difficult to foresee full-scale recovery of vehicle demand in advanced countries, there is an active restructuring of business systems on a global scale in pursuit of enhancing earning power.

Vehicle Exports |
After plunging 40% year-on-year in 2009 due to the global economic downturn, China’s vehicle exports are heading for recovery in 2010. Thanks to 40% year-on-year expansion at home, some Chinese automakers are showing strong tendencies toward preferring to supply the domestic market. On the other hand, the central government sees room for expansion of exports, which account for less than 5% of total factory shipment, developing and enhancing vehicle exports as core force of China’s future GDP growth.
|
|
Automotive Parts Supply |
While automotive parts supply in China shows that suppliers, especially Japanese and Koreans, still primarily trade with automakers from their own country, due to massive launches of low-cost passenger cars, there is active supply relationship among companies from various countries in an effort to improve cost competitiveness. In some parts sectors, foreign automakers have begun to switch from their traditional suppliers to local ones. The dynamics of supply between automakers and suppliers are changing as a result of more and more green vehicle projects.
