Ideal and Reality in Practical Application of Electric Vehicle in China’s Automotive Industry Seen at EVS25

The 25th World Battery, Hybrid and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles Symposium and Exhibition (hereinafter referred to as EVS25) was held for five days between Nov. 5 and 9, 2010. The event took place at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Guangdong Province and FOURIN conducted local report on the press days between Nov. 5 and 7, 2010.

Following the wake of the previous EVS edition held in Stavanger, Norway, in 2009, EVS25 attracted automotive manufacturers and automotive suppliers from around the world to become the largest to date, exhibiting 220 different vehicles. Also, the academic forum, which was held at the same time, received over 1,000 dissertations and made a new record as well.

The International Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exhibition series (EVS) is one of the world largest events of electric vehicles which is organized by the World Electric Vehicle Association based in Palo Alto, California. The EVS has a history of 41 years since it was first held in 1969 as a mere academic forum for scholars who engage in development and manufacturing of electric vehicles. In China, this is the third time to hold EVS after EVS10 in Hong Kong in 1990 and EVS16 in Beijing in 1999.

EVS25’s venue, Shenzhen, is the largest city in Southern China with population of 9 million. Shenzhen is known as one of the largest assembly bases for the IT industry in the world along with neighboring Hong Kong and periphery cities in the Pearl River Delta, as well as a base of BYD Auto which has become known far and wide for its EV strategy.

Official sponsors for EVS25 include global and Chinese automotive manufacturers and suppliers such as Toyota Motor, Nissan Motors, VW, Siemens, Fuji Electric, BYD Auto, Guangqi Auto and Wuzhoulong Motor.

Furthermore, EVS25 showed a great presence, comparable to an international motor show such as Beijing Motor Show, highlighted by the attendance of automotive experts including Wan Gang, China’s Minister of Science and Technology, Karl-Thomas Neumann, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group China and automotive expert, as well as BYD CEO Wang Chuan-Fu.

Spurred by the recent worldwide EV boom, many new entrants devote attention to electric vehicle in order to develop a new revenue streams. New entrants which took part in EVS25 include Zhuzhou CSR Times Electric Co., Ltd. which made a transition from a supplier of high-speed rail components to an EV parts supplier, Xiangtan Electric Manufacturing Corp. Ltd., a mining locomotive supplier which strives to enter into the passenger car in-wheel motor business, power companies which aim to support expanding demand for infrastructure installation and cutting tool suppliers.

Looking back on history, EVs once prospered in the early development stage of the automotive industry. However, due to a lack of electric storage capacity, popularity for EVs was taken over by vehicles fitted with internal-combustion engines which use fossil fuels because of the high amount of energy in liquid fuels, which allows vehicle to travel farther compared to EVs.

Even in 2010, the dominance of vehicles fitted with the internal combustion engines is continuing. Auto industry observers including FOURIN regard a recent boom of EVs is just propelled by multibillion-CNY financial assistance from the Chinese government since there is no powertrain for EVs comparable to gasoline engines regarding efficiency and economy. Therefore, in order to maintain the EV boom and foster it as one of the core industries, not only governments, companies and academies have to cooperate together, but mostly, it is needed to build up awareness of general public to get into EVs. Zhang Xiao Yu, president of the Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE China) emphasized at the academic forum that technical cooperation between nations is crucial and repeatedly indicated China’s proactive stance toward introduction of cutting-edge technologies from abroad. Furthermore, EVS25, which focuses on the theme “Sustainable Mobility Revolution”, suggested the importance of cooperation within the Chinese industry and between nations as well as the establishment of technical standards.
