India’s 11th Auto Expo 2012 got underway from January 5th in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Beginning with press announcements on the first two days, the event was open to the general public from the 7th through to the 11th. A total of 1,500 companies from 24 countries exhibited at Auto Expo 2012, where around 50 models (including two-wheelers etc.) made their world premiere, of which, about 30 were passenger vehicles.
Held once every two years, this year’s motor show saw a large number of SUV and MPV types announced. Compact cars are currently the mainstream model type in the Indian market, yet in response to diversifying needs of vehicle buyers, automakers are looking to enhance their lineups with highly versatile products. Maruti Suzuki revealed the Ertiga compact minivan and a concept version SUV, while Tata Motors showed off the Safari Storme and a range of light and medium duty trucks. Mahindra & Mahindra announced an SUV under the Ssangyong brand. Hyundai Motor showed off the Hexa Space concept MPV and the redesigned Sonata. Additionally, GM announced the Sail compact hatchback and the Chevrolet MPV, while Ford offered the all-new Eco Sports SUV. Local maker Bajaj Auto used Auto Expo 2012 to give the first unveiling of its ultra low-cost RE60.
