The 15th Shanghai International Automobile Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2013) opened on April 19th, 2013. Press day on April 20th was followed by industry day on the 21st and public days from April 22th to 29th. About 1,300 vehicles were displayed of which 111 are world premiere models and another 49 are Asia premiere products. Automakers unveiled a number of new and concept SUV models in response to this vehicle type’s popularity in China. In addition, amid worsening environmental pollution, the exhibition of energy-saving and new-energy vehicle also drew attention.

VW displayed models with a focus on fuel efficiency, appealing its BlueMotion technology. The company announced its plan to improve fuel efficiency 11 percent by 2015, showing its intention to continue product development in pursuit of low fuel consumption. In addition, Japanese automakers, which were forced to significantly lower production in the second half of 2012, also held a number of world and China premieres, indicating by their unveiled product lineup that make much of the Chinese market. Nissan, in particular, which held world premiere of the Friend-ME concept model which was developed especially for Chinese youth born in the 80ies. The car featured a hybrid powertrain and colored in a bright blue hue.

In addition, Toyota announced the own-brand of its two local joint ventures, while Nissan unveiled Dongfeng Nissan’s Viwa concept model under the independent Venucia brand, making the impression that Japanese automakers are stepping up their joint venture own-brand strategy. GAC Honda, which was the first to release a joint venture own-brand, also announced a new model the S1 under the Everus own brand, further indicating that Japanese automakers are increasing the role of joint venture own brands in China.

In response to the implementation of stage 3 fuel efficiency regulation and rising environmental awareness of Chinese drivers, automakers displayed hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric models, boasting advancements in eco-technology. While a great number of electric prototypes were exhibited in the past by Chinese automakers, this time foreign manufacturers as well displayed many electric and plug-in hybrid concepts. However, interviews with automakers revealed that due to an underdeveloped charging infrastructure, the dissemination of electric and plug-in hybrid models is not advancing, indicating that the mass use of new-energy vehicles will take time.
